BACKGROUND: Chemomechanical debridement is insufficient to disinfect all bacteria from the root canals of primary teeth, and obturation of canals with an appropriate material thus acquires excellent importance and remains a critical step in the ultimate success of pulpectomy. AIM: The aim of the study was to compare and evaluate Endoflas, Metapex, and a mixture of calcium hydroxide (CH) and zinc oxide (ZnO) as obturating materials (OMs) in primary mandibular second molars. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-five mandibular second primary molars requiring pulpectomies were identified in children aged 4-8 years. They were randomly allocated to the three treatment groups according to the type of OM received using the block randomization technique. After the completion of chemomechanical debridement, the canals were filled with Endoflas, Metapex, and CH-ZnO mixture, respectively. The intergroup clinical and radiographic comparison was made based on Coll and Sadrian criteria to decipher their clinical performance at 1, 3, and 6 months. RESULTS: No statistically significant differences between the groups were observed at any evaluation time interval (P > 0.05). At 6 months, the clinical success rates were 95.2% in Endoflas, 96% in Metapex, and 95.8% in the CH and ZnO mixture groups, respectively. The materials, however, behaved differently in different clinical situations. CONCLUSION: Based on the observations, all three OMs showed similar clinical success in maintaining tooth functioning, but their use can be restricted to indications. However, prospective studies with longer follow-ups with more stringent eligibility criteria are required to reach more definitive conclusions.

Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of ethanol compared to citric acid in the removal of oil-based calcium hydroxide from the apical third of the root canal system using passive ultrasonic irrigation. METHODS: The in vitro study was conducted from September to October 2021 at the dental clinics of the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, and comprised single-rooted teeth that were selected from institutional bank of extracted teeth. They were randomly divided into group A having 70% ethanol + passive ultrasonic irrigation, group B 10% citric acid + passive ultrasonic irrigation, group C positive controls and group D negative controls. The specimens were sectioned at 1mm and 3mm from the apex and examined under a dental operating microscope. A single examiner scored the specimens on two different occasions. Data was analysed using SPSS 25. RESULTS: Of the 90 teeth, there were 40(44.4%) in each of the 2 experimental groups and 5(5.5%) in each of the 2 control groups. At 3mm apical sections, ethanol was significantly more effective in the removal of oil-based calcium hydroxide (p=0.01). However, at 1mm from the apex, there was no significant difference between the experimental groups (p=0.064). Intragroup comparison showed that for groups A and B, residual medicament at 1mm sections was significantly greater than at 3mm sections (p<0.001, p=0.003). CONCLUSIONS: Neither irrigant showed complete removal at 1mm and 3mm from the apex. However, at 3mm apical sections, 70% ethanol was significantly more effective compared to 10% citric acid.

Accomplishment of an ideal root canal treatment is attributed to various essential factors such as proper instrumentation, chemomechanical preparation, obturation and post endodontic restoration. The main aim of this study is to test the null hypothesis that is the moisture condition of root dentin would not affect the bond strength and sealer penetration. This is an in vitro study conducted in Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, M A Rangoonwala Dental College, Pune, India over a period of two years (from 2021 to 2023). One hundred and twenty single-rooted Premolars with fully formed apices and similar root morphology were obtained and stored in 0.1% thymol solution. The specimens were randomly assigned to 3 broad experimental groups (n=40) according to the drying protocol such as Group A- Paper points (P), Group B- diode laser (L) and Group C- isopropyl alcohol (A). For each drying protocol, the specimens were further assigned to 2 subgroups (n=20) with respect to the sealers used: AH Plus (AH) and Apexit Plus sealers (APx). The effect of drying protocol using paper points, isopropyl alcohol and diode-lasers on the bond strength and tag penetration of two different sealers to the root dentin was evaluated. Maximum overall push-out Bond strength was seen in group AH+L and least in group APx+ L. Inter-site push-out bond Strength was highest in the coronal third followed by the middle and least in the apical third of all the groups. Maximum over all depth of penetration was seen in group AH+L and minimum in group APx+L. AH plus sealer showed better bond strength, sealer penetration and adaptation to the dentinal walls compared to Apexit plus sealer, irrespective of the drying protocol followed. All the drying protocols used did not show statistically significant results in the apical thirds of root canals of all the groups.

When dental pulp is exposed, it must be covered with a biocompatible material to form reparative dentine. The material used, besides being biocompatible, should have an ideal surface structure for the attachment, proliferation and differentiation of dental pulp stem cells. This study aimed to evaluate the porosity of the microstructures of four pulp capping materials using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). Biodentine, Bioaggregate, TheraCal and Dycal materials were prepared according to the manufacturer's instructions using 2 × 9 mm Teflon molds. A total of 60 samples, 15 in each group, were scanned using micro-CT. Open and closed pores and the total porosity of the microstructures of the materials were assessed. The findings obtained from the study were analyzed via the Kruskal-Wallis test followed by the Mann-Whitney U test. The porosity of Bioaggregate was significantly higher than that of Biodentine, Dycal and TheraCal in all porosity values. While Biodentine did not show a statistically significant difference in open and total porosity values from either TheraCal or Dycal, closed porosity values of Dycal were significantly higher than those of Biodentine and TheraCal. Because of the affinity of cells to porous surfaces, the pulp capping materials' microstructure may affect the pulp capping treatment's success. From this perspective, the use of Bioaggregate in direct pulp capping may increase the success of treatment.

AIM: This study aims to evaluate the impact of asiaticoside (AC) on the viability and proliferation of dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs), considering the known negative effects of routinely used intracanal medicaments. This evaluation will be compared with the outcomes from using traditional intracanal medicaments, specifically triple antibiotic paste (TAP) and calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2]. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The DPSCs were obtained from the third molars of an adult donor. The application of flow cytometry was employed to do a phenotypic analysis on DPSCs using CD90, CD73, CD105, CD34, CD14, and CD45 antibodies. The methylthiazol tetrazolium (MTT) assay was employed to assess cellular viability. The cells were treated with different concentrations of TAP and Ca(OH)2 (5, 2.5, 1, 0.5, and 0.25 mg/mL), along with AC (100, 50, 25, 12.5, and 6.25 µM). A cell proliferation rate was performed at 3, 5, and 7 days. RESULTS: The characterization of DPSCs was conducted by flow cytometry analysis, which verified the presence of mesenchymal cell surface antigen molecules (CD105, CD73, and CD90) and demonstrated the absence of hematopoietic markers (CD34, CD45, and CD14). Cells treated with concentrations over 0.5 mg/mL of TAP and Ca(OH)2 showed a notable reduction in cell viability in comparison to the untreated cells (p < 0.05). Additionally, the cells treated with different concentrations of AC 12.5, 6.25, 25, and 50 µM did not differ significantly from the untreated cells (p > 0.05). Nevertheless, cells treated with concentrations of 100 µM showed a significant reduction in viability compared to the untreated cells (p < 0.05). After a period of 7 days, it was noted that cells exposed to three different concentrations of AC (50, 25, and 12.5 µM) had a notable rise in cell density in comparison to TAP and Ca(OH)2 (p < 0.05). Furthermore, cells that were exposed to a concentration of 12.5 µM exhibited the highest cell density. CONCLUSION: The cellular viability of the AC-treated cells was superior to that of the TAP and Ca(OH)2-treated cells. Moreover, the AC with a concentration of 12.5 µM had the highest degree of proliferation. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This study underscores the importance of evaluating alternative root canal medicaments and their effects on DPSCs' growth and vitality. The findings on AC, particularly its influence on the survival and proliferation of DPSCs, offer valuable insights for its probable use as an intracanal medication. This research contributes to the ongoing efforts to identify safer and more effective intracanal treatments, which are crucial for enhancing patient outcomes in endodontic procedures. PURPOSE: To investigate the influence of methylene blue (MB)-mediated antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) and calcium hydroxide (CH) medication on the mechanical characteristics, degree of conversion (DC), quantification, and volume of gaps at the adhesive interface of glass fiber posts (GFPs) luted to distinct thirds of root canal dentin. Additionally, the microhardness (MH), elastic modulus (Eit), morphology, and chemical structure of the intraradicular dentin were assessed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 6 experimental groups were formed by sorting 102 bovine incisors. Canals receiving deionized water irrigation as a negative control; canals receiving deionized water irrigation and filled with CH as a positive control; groups treated with CH + MB at 50 and 100 mg/L without irradiation; and groups treated with CH + MB at 50 and 100 mg/L irradiated by red laser for 60 s (660 nm; 100 mW; 6.5 J; 72 J/cm2). MH, Eit, and DC properties were evaluated for both the resin cement layer and root dentin substrate (n = 8). Volume and quantification of gaps at the bonding interface (n = 6), and dentin morphology and chemical content were investigated (n = 3). Data were analyzed using a repeated-measures 2-way ANOVA followed by Tukey post hoc analysis (α = 0.05). RESULTS: The distinct intraradicular thirds and treatment with MB-mediated aPDT, whether activated or not, in combination with CH, had a significant impact on the mechanical characteristics of the root dentin. This effect was also observed in the MH, Eit, DC, quantification, and volume of gaps at the luting interface (P < .05). In general, a higher concentration of MB, whether activated by a red laser or not, led to lower values in the mechanical properties of the root dentin, as well as in MH, Eit, and DC at the adhesive interface (P < .05). Additionally, these groups exhibited higher values for quantification and volume of gaps at the luting substrate (P < .05). Scanning electron micrographs and energy dispersive X-ray spectra showed qualitative similarity among all groups, except for the negative experimental control group. CONCLUSIONS: MB-mediated aPDT at 50 mg/L, in combination with CH, demonstrated favorable physico-chemical and mechanical characteristics in intraradicular dentin, along with satisfactory mechanical features and the adhesive interface integrity for GFPs at all intraradicular depths. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: MB-mediated aPDT at a concentration of 50 mg/L combined to CH medication represents a suitable choice for photosensitization in the context of intracanal disinfection following the biomechanical procedure and prior to luting of intraradicular restorations.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the clinical and radiographic outcomes of non-instrumentation endodontic treatment (NIET) using a modified antibiotic mix of cefixime, ciprofloxacin and metronidazole with simvastatin (an anti-inflammatory, bone regeneration drug) on necrotic primary molars compared to conventional pulpectomy to help preservation of necrotic primary teeth until its natural exfoliation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty mandibular primary second molars with necrotic pulp tissue from 38 healthy patients aged between 4 and 8 years were randomly assigned to two groups with a 1:1 allocation ratio. Group A teeth underwent conventional root canal treatment. The procedure involved a two-visit approach, employing k-files and h-files during the initial visit, followed by the application of calcium hydroxide paste as canal dressing between visits, while Group B teeth were treated with 3Mixtatin. All teeth were clinically evaluated after 1, 3, 6, and 12 months, and radiographically at 3, 6, and 12 months. Two external examiners assessed the results. Data analysis was conducted using a chi-square test at a 0.05 significance level. RESULTS: At the end of the follow-up interval, 90% of teeth in each group exhibited no clinical signs or symptoms. Additionally, inter-radicular radiolucency healing occurred in 75% of cases in the NIET group and 89.5% in the conventional pulpectomy group. However, no statistically significant difference was found between the two groups. CONCLUSION: NIET using 3Mixtatin seems to be a good alternative choice to conventional pulpectomy, offering a less complex treatment approach that may help avoid the complications associated with traditional pulpectomy and could be suitable for teeth with shorter roots.

High expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in periapical lesions plays an important role in the degradation of the extracellular matrix. This study aimed to investigate the effect of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG)-based endodontic paste as an intracanal dressing on the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in periapical lesions. Periapical lesions were experimentally induced in 35 mature beagle dog premolars randomly divided into healthy teeth, untreated periapical lesions, periapical lesions treated in a single session (control groups), and periapical lesions treated in two sessions with EGCG or calcium hydroxide-based pastes (experimental groups). After 120 days, specimens were obtained for histopathologic and immunofluorescence analyses to assess the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9. The statistical analysis was performed using a p-value of 0.05. Endodontic treatment in two sessions using medication with EGCG and calcium hydroxide-based pastes provided similar repair of the apical and periapical tissues and neoformation of periodontal ligament fibers, cementum, and alveolar bone (p>0.05). The experimental groups treated in two sessions with both medications presented expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 similar to that in healthy teeth (p>0.05), and significantly lower than teeth treated in a single session or untreated periapical lesions (p <0.001). Expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 was observed in the cytoplasm of fibroblasts, osteoblasts, cementoblasts, cementocytes, and vascular endothelium. The use of EGCG-based endodontic paste reduced the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 and allowed repair of periapical lesions, similar to calcium hydroxide-based paste, and superior to treatment performed in a single session.

OBJECTIVES: To perform a systematic review of animal studies that compared the histopathological characteristics between teeth with apical periodontitis after endodontic treatment in one or two visits. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This systematic review was registered on the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) - CRD42022340849. Studies were collected from PubMed/MEDLINE, LILACS, EMBASE, Livivo, SciELO, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane Library and manual and gray literature searches. Animal studies that evaluated histological characteristics after endodontic treatment of teeth with apical periodontitis in one or two visits were included. Risk of bias analysis of the included studies was performed using the Systematic Review Centre for Laboratory Animal Experimentation (SYRCLE) tool. Data synthesis of the included studies with quantitative data was performed, and meta-analysis was conducted with the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software, using the random effects model and odds ratio (OR). RESULTS: Eighteen studies met the inclusion criteria (Kappa = 0.891). Meta-analyses indicated values in inflammatory infiltrate intensity with effect size of 5.5% (95% CI: 0.020-0.148; p < 0.001), periodontal ligament thickness: 25.6% (95% CI: 0.134-0.487; p < 0.001), dentin resorption: 13% (95% CI: 0.015-1.141; p = 0.066), cementum resorption: 7.1% (95% CI: 0.015-0.325; p = 0.001), bone resorption: 1.4% (95% CI: 0.002-0.130; p < 0.001), mineralized tissue resorption: 42.8% (95% CI: 0.110-1.671; p = 0.222), biological apical sealing: 13.1% (95% CI: 0.055-0.314; p < 0.001), and presence of microorganisms: 10.3% (95% CI: 0.014-0.747; p = 0.025). CONCLUSIONS: When considering animal studies, the two-visit endodontic treatment, using calcium hydroxide-based intracanal medication, resulted in better biological repair characteristics. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: A two-visit endodontic treatment with calcium hydroxide-based intracanal medication yields superior histopathological outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Porosity is a crucial parameter that affects the solubility, sealing and mechanical strength of a material. It plays a significant role in determining the success of treatment. OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to evaluate and compare the porosity of different bioceramic-based materials, using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the study, 76 permanent lower first or second molars that had been extracted for periodontal reasons and were free of calcification, resorption, root cavities, fractures, or cracks, with discrete roots and complete root apex development were selected. In each of the 4 experimental groups, perforations were made in the furcation areas of 19 molars. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) Angelus®, EndoSequence® Root Repair Material (ERRM), Biodentine™, and BioAggregate were placed on the perforated areas of the samples and scanned with a micro-CT to evaluate porosity. The pore volume and the pore percentage with regard to the closed, open and total porosity of these repair materials were calculated individually in each sample. RESULTS: While no statistically significant differences were found between group I (MTA), group III (Biodentine) and group IV (BioAggregate) when evaluating the total pore percentage (p > 0.05), the parameter in group II (ERRM) was found to be significantly lower as compared to other groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In comparison with the other materials used in this study, the use of ERRM may be more suitable for perforation repair.

BACKGROUND: An innovative intracanal medication formulation was introduced in the current study to improve the calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) therapeutic capability against resistant Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) biofilm. This in-vitro study aimed to prepare, characterize, and evaluate the antibacterial efficiency of Ca(OH)2 loaded on Gum Arabic (GA) nanocarrier (Ca(OH)2-GA NPs) and to compare this efficiency with conventional Ca(OH)2, Ca(OH)2 nanoparticles (NPs), GA, and GA NPs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The prepared nanoparticle formulations for the tested medications were characterized using Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). 141 human mandibular premolars were selected, and their root canals were prepared. Twenty-one roots were then sectioned into 42 tooth slices. All prepared root canals (n = 120) and teeth slices (n = 42) were divided into six groups according to the intracanal medication used. E. faecalis was inoculated in the samples for 21 days to form biofilms, and then the corresponding medications were applied for 7 days. After medication application, the residual E. faecalis bacteria were assessed using CFU, Q-PCR, and SEM. Additionally, the effect of Ca(OH)2-GA NPs on E. faecalis biofilm genes (agg, ace, and efaA) was investigated using RT-PCR. Data were statistically analyzed at a 0.05 level of significance. RESULTS: The synthesis of NPs was confirmed using TEM. The results of the FTIR proved that the Ca(OH)2 was successfully encapsulated in the GA NPs. Ca(OH)2-GA NPs caused a significant reduction in the E. faecalis biofilm gene expression when compared to the control (p < 0.001). There were significant differences in the E. faecalis CFU mean count and CT mean values between the tested groups (p < 0.001) except between the Ca(OH)2 and GA CFU mean count. Ca(OH)2-GA NPs showed the least statistical E. faecalis mean count among other groups. SEM observation showed that E. faecalis biofilm was diminished in all treatment groups, especially in the Ca(OH)2-GA NPS group when compared to the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Ca(OH)2 and GA nanoparticles demonstrate superior anti-E. faecalis activity when compared to their conventional counterparts. Ca(OH)2-GA NPs showed the best antibacterial efficacy in treating E. faecalis biofilm. The tested NP formulations could be considered as promising intracanal medications.

AIM: To compare and evaluate the sealing ability of four different commercially available sealers to provide seal against the dye penetration test using a stereomicroscope-an in-vitro study. MATERIAL/METHOD: 80 extracted single rooted mandibular premolar with single canal were used in this study. The samples were divided in 4 groups (20 in each) based on sealer. Group I (Diaproseal), Group II (apexit Plus), Group III (MTA Fillapex) and Group IV (Bio-C). The samples were analyzed using a stereomicroscope and data analysis was done with one-way Anova And post hoc Tukey's test. RESULT: The mean dye penetration score was 1.2400 ± 0.778 mm for Group I. 2.6000 ± 0.897 mm for Group II, 4.2000 ± 0.923 mm for Group III and 4.225 ± 2.055 mm for Group IV. One-way Anova analysis shows that intergroup comparison was statistically significant between the four groups. The post hoc Tukey's test reveals that the difference was statistically non-significant between group III and group IV. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that between the four groups the Group I (Diaproseal) showed the least dye penetration followed by Group II (Apexit Pus), Group III (MTA Fillapex) and then Group IV (Bio-C), where there was no significant difference between the Group III (MTA Fillapex) and Group IV (Bio-C).

PURPOSE: To evaluate the biological and physical properties of calcium hydroxide-containing pulp-capping materials and their modifications with different solutions and antioxidant Resveratrol (RES) addition. METHODS: Calcium hydroxide+distilled-water:C, calcium hydroxide+saline:S, calcium hydroxide+synthetic tissue fluid:STF, Dycal:D, calcium hydroxide+distilled-water+RES:C+RES, calcium hydroxide+saline+RES:S+RES, calcium hydroxide+synthetic tissue fluid+RES:STF+RES, Dycal+RES:D+RES were tested. Cytotoxicity was determined by WST-1. Antibacterial-activity was evaluated by agar-diffusion. The water-absorption and solubility were examined for ISO-6876 and ISO-3107. The color-change was evaluated by spectrophotometer. Radiopacity was evaluated for ISO-6876 and ISO-9917. The normal distribution and homogeneity were determined and comparisons were made with appropriate analysis and post hoc tests (P < 0.05). RESULTS: The highest cell-viability was determined in the C+RES and the lowest was in D and D+RES after 24 h (P < 0.0001). RES-addition increased cell-viability and the highest rate was detected in C+RES, S+RES and STF+RES after 48 h (P < 0.0001). A limited inhibition-zone against Streptococcus mutans was detected in D and D+RES. RES-addition did not change the water-absorption in S and STF or the solubility in S group. CONCLUSION: RES-addition may be used to increase the biocompatibility of calcium hydroxide without any adverse effect on physical properties. Saline may be the first choice as a mixing solution.

INTRODUCTION: Calcium hydroxide pastes (CHPs), commonly used for disinfecting root canals during endodontic treatment, are generally considered safe. However, accidental extrusions result in minimal injuries and little to no discomfort, except when extruded pastes come into contact with nerve bundles, such as the inferior alveolar nerve. Currently, there is a lack of information about the possible role of specific paste vehicles on the extent of nerve injury. The purpose of this study was to compare the role that paste vehicles, such as water or methylcellulose, may play when nerve fibers are exposed to CHP. METHODS: Isolated sciatic nerves of Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to either water-based or methylcellulose-based CHP for varying durations of time (30, 60, or 90 minutes). Histopathological changes, including axonal edema, myelin alterations, and loss of cellular outlines, were assessed, and the degrees of changes were compared using chi-square intraclass correlation coefficient tests. RESULTS: Both groups exposed to the pastes demonstrated varying degrees of histopathologic changes, including axonal edema, myelin changes, and loss of cellular outlines, at different exposure times. The water-based calcium hydroxide paste induced these changes more rapidly than the methylcellulose-based paste. Similar patterns were observed in the scanning electron microscopic findings. Exposure time emerged as an important difference in the effects of the 2 pastes. In each of these tests, all observations of water-based paste exposure were rated as moderate to severe, whereas the observed cellular changes (axonal, myelin, and intact cellular outline) were rated as mild to moderate after exposure to methylcellulose-based paste for the same exposure durations. The chi-square tests indicated a statistically significant association between the material and each of the outcomes (axonal changes: χ²15 = 81.0, P < .001; myelin changes: χ²15 = 81.0, P < .001; intact cellular outline, χ²15 = 81.0, P < .001). The intraclass correlation coefficient value was 0.93. CONCLUSIONS: The study demonstrates that axonal and myelin damage increase with longer exposure times, with water-based CHP causing more damage than methylcellulose-based CHP at each time point.

BACKGROUND: Calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] is widely accepted as a biocompatible interappointment intracanal medicament. This study aimed to analyze the efficacy of Ca(OH)2 placement into the C-shaped canal system of mandibular second molars using the syringe method with and without lentulo spiral utilizing micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). METHODS: Twenty-four extracted mandibular second molars were instrumented and classified into C-shaped floors (n = 12) and non-C-shaped floors (n = 12). Both groups were placed with Ca(OH)2 using the syringe system, then all teeth were scanned and cleaned, and placed with Ca(OH)2 again but with the syringe system followed by lentulo spiral and rescanned. The specimens were scanned using micro-CT to analyze the volume, volume percentage, uncontacted surface area, and uncontacted surface area percentage of Ca(OH)2 with the two delivery methods in the entire canal and at the apical 4 mm of the canal. Mann-Whitney test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test were used to determine the statistical differences among the groups. RESULTS: Syringe administration used in conjunction with lentulo spiral presented lower uncontacted surface area, a lower percentage of uncontacted surface area, larger volume, and a higher percentage of volume than syringe without lentulo spiral (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the C-shaped floor group and the non-C-shaped floor group (P > 0.05) in the Ca(OH)2 uncontacted surface area, volume, and percentages at different regions of canals and among different delivery techniques groups. CONCLUSIONS: The lentulo spiral and syringe technique combination can increase the volume and contacted surface area of Ca(OH)2 in the C-shaped canal system of mandibular second molars.

One of the major end-products of lignocellulosic biorefining chain is the solid residues containing various compounds. The present approach to solid residues treatment is combustion for generation of heat and electricity. This study investigated the potential for recycling of the combustion ash from the solid residues after lignocellulosic dry biorefining process. A range of characterizations showed that the combustion ash contained a high amount of calcium carbonate. By recycling the ash as the neutralizer in biorefining process, the waste calcium carbonate in the ash was efficiently utilized for pretreated biomass neutralization and can replace 40 % of calcium hydroxide for lactic acid production. The chiral L-lactic acid titer reached 102.4 ± 3.6 g/L from 20 % (w/w) solids loading of wheat straw. Three feasible strategies of ash recycling for the investigated biorefinery concept were further proposed base on the rigorous calcium mass calculation, which can efficiently reduce the consumption of neutralizers.

This study aimed to compare the syringe-needle irrigation (SNI), passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), EDDY, and shock wave-enhanced emission photoacoustic streaming (SWEEPS) techniques regarding calcium hydroxide and double antibiotic paste removal from the root canal in regenerative endodontic treatments. Eighty single-rooted human teeth were decoronated and enlarged up to #100 to stimulate the immature tooth model. Root canals were irrigated with 1.5% sodium hypochlorite followed by saline solution according to the regenerative endodontic treatment protocol. Dressed teeth were divided into 2 main groups regarding the used intracanal medicaments. Calcium hydroxide and double antibiotic paste were introduced to the canals, and teeth were stored for 3 weeks. Each medicament group was divided into 4 subgroups according to the activation techniques. Medicaments were removed using a 17% EDTA solution. Teeth were split longitudinally into two parts. The remaining medicaments were evaluated under a stereo microscope with a scoring system. Data were analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. Regardless of the used irrigation activation systems, there was no statistically significant difference between the removal of the CH and DAP from the root canal (P>0.05). While SWEEPS had the highest ability regarding the removal of intracanal medicaments, syringe-needle irrigation had the lowest (P<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between PUI and EDDY (P>0.05). Complete removal of intracanal medicaments could not be achieved with any techniques. SWEEPS technology was more effective in removing intracanal medicaments in regenerative endodontic treatments compared to the sonic and ultrasonic irrigation activation systems.

Carbon dioxide and kimchi odor compounds, formed during fermentation, negatively affect the long-distance distribution of commercial kimchi. To address these issues, in this study, we modified different porous media (activated carbon, bleaching earth, diatomite, and zeolite) using sodium bicarbonate and silver (Ag) ions. Functional sheets were prepared using linear low-density polyethylene, calcium hydroxide, a porous medium, and a blowing agent. Various prepared porous media and sheets were effective in removing acetic acid, sulfur compounds (allyl methyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, allyl methyl disulfide, and diallyl disulfide), and carbon dioxide. Porous media with micropores exhibited a sulfur compound removal efficiency of 43.5%-99.4%, while no effect was observed on acetic acid removal. However, porous media with mesopores showed an acetic acid removal efficiency of 42.3%-90.7%, with no reduction in sulfur compounds removal. The impregnation of porous materials with sodium bicarbonate significantly (p < 0.05) enhanced the acetic acid removal activity. Ag modification improved the sulfur compound removal of the mesoporous bleaching earth and diatomite statistically (p < 0.05). Additionally, the incorporation of sodium bicarbonate-impregnated mesoporous media significantly improved carbon dioxide removal, reducing concentrations from 25.97% to 14.27% with respect to the control group. Our functional food packaging materials can solve the current issues in kimchi distribution by removing carbon dioxide and kimchi odor without affecting its quality. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Food active packaging materials containing calcium hydroxide and modified porous medium are effective in removing carbon dioxide and kimchi odor (acetic acid and sulfur compounds). The removal of carbon dioxide and kimchi odor, which adversely affect the distribution and sale of commercial kimchi, can help solve the current issues with kimchi distribution without affecting its quality.

INTRODUCTION: A 65-year-old man had nonsurgical retreatment using an iodoform and calcium hydroxide paste in a maxillary left canine with persistent apical periodontitis. An apical mineralized barrier (AMB) was observed 3-months postoperatively. Unfortunately, the tooth was extracted due to a cementum tear. This provided an opportunity to analyze the AMB histologically, as there is a lack of previous reports on its microstructure. METHODS: After extraction and removal of the granulation tissue from the root surface, the canine was processed, and observed using micro-computed tomography (µCT) and light microscopy. Thereafter, the specimen was resin-embedded specimen was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, micro-X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy to understand the mechanism and nature of the AMB formation during apical healing. RESULTS: Nonsurgical retreatment was clinically successful based on the absence of clinical symptoms of apical periodontitis and the radiographic presence of an AMB. The AMB was opaque and could be readily differentiated from dentin under a light microscope. Micro-computed tomography analysis revealed that the AMB had the same mineral density as dentin. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the AMB had two distinct layers based on the size of the calcified particles. Elemental mapping using micro-X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy showed that the localization of calcium and phosphorus differed between AMB and other areas of biomineralization. Raman spectral mapping revealed that the surface layer of the AMB consisted of collagen, calcium carbonate, and hydroxyapatite. CONCLUSIONS: This study explored new analytical methods for elucidating the apical wound-healing process and the nature of the mineralized repair. The findings provided detailed information on the AMB highlighting a bilaminar structure with high calcium components higher on the inside and a brightness similar to cementum not dentin and the presence of hydroxyapatite.

BACKGROUND: Cerium ions promote osteoclastogenesis and activate bone metabolism, while cerium oxide nanoparticles exhibit potent anti-inflammatory properties, making them promising for biomedical applications. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a synthesis method for sustained-release cerium-ion bioceramics containing apatite. Substituted apatite was found to be an effective biomaterial. METHODS: Cerium-containing chlorapatite was synthesized using a mechanochemical method employing dicalcium phosphate, cerium chloride heptahydrate, and calcium hydroxide as raw materials. The synthesized samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. RESULTS: Cerium chlorapatite was successfully synthesized in the 10.1% and 20.1% samples. However, at Ce concentrations higher than 30.2%, the samples consisted of three or more phases, indicating the instability of a single phase. CONCLUSION: The method used in this study was found to be more efficient and cost-effective than the precipitation method for producing substituted apatite and calcium phosphate-based biomaterials. This research contributes to the development of sustained-release cerium-ion bioceramics with potential applications in the field of biomedicine.
